Profile

The Ophthalmology Unit focuses on eye surgery, performing a wide range of ophthalmologic surgeries in adults and children. The Unit’s modern operating theatre allows for over 1,000 surgeries on inpatients and 500 surgeries on outpatients performed each year. High standards of operating rooms (i.e. full profile air-conditioning system) contribute to the increase of the safety of the surgeries performed and ensure patient’s comfort. Surgeries are performed either with local or general anaesthesia, depending on the needs, with an anaesthesiologist present all the time. The most common surgery performed at the Unit is cataract surgery combined with lens replacement.
The Unit possesses a comprehensive diagnostic base which allows for diagnosing complicated ophthalmological cases and their treatment. The Unit comprises: ophthalmological ultrasonography room, where biometric examination of the eyeball may be performed in linear mode (i.e. A-mode) and cross-sectional mode (i.e. B-mode), which is particularly important in the case of non-transparent eye centre in cataract or vitreous haemorrhage and a so-called UBM, which allows for precise imaging of the anterior part of the eye. Modern equipment in the fluorescein angiography laboratory, such as high quality fundus camera allows for photographing the fundus of the eye, with and without contrast, which is called fluorescein angiography (this examination is performed at the angiography laboratory at the Polyclinic). Modern diagnostic methods used at the Unit include also eyeball imaging using MRI and the examination of visual evoked potentials – performed for the Unit at the Magnetic Resonance Laboratory and Neurophysiology Division of our Hospital. Laser Therapy Laboratory situated at the Unit is equipped with two modern lasers: YAG laser and green laser.
